Remote dog training collars: Tools of torture or communication devices?

There are many ways to use a remote dog training collar. Unfortunately the first idea that comes to mind for many people is the thought that it is the *biggest hammer* in the tool box and should only be used after all other possibilities have been exhausted.

I believe this philosophy stems back to the origins of electronic collar use when the technology was crude and the uses were quite harsh. In the very early days there was pretty much one level and that level was OUCH!

But technological advances have taken us a long way since then and it is time we experience a shift in the thinking that a remote collar can only be used as a tool of punishment or correction. Variable levels of stimulation provides us with many options for training. One such option is the ability to use the remote collar as a prompt for attention much like tapping someone on the shoulder. The physical contact of the tap is a way to break through distraction when attention is focused elsewhere. The tap doesn’t need to be a slap in order to be effective.

Here is a video example of what I am talking about.

What are your thoughts? Can this tool be used in a responsible way or is it only a tool that is harmful for dogs?
