Learning how to train with a remote dog collar works wonders

This past August I taught a workshop on how to use a remote training collar (or unfortunately as some people call them: shock collar) to teach basic obedience and manners to pet dogs. Over the course of two days we worked on exercises like how to find the right level to gain the dog’s attention, how to teach loose lead walking, stay in one place and come when called. The training helps those who may think of the tool as a “shock collar” to understand that it is actually a much kinder and gentler tool than they may have previously imagined. Most importantly, we help enhance the human-animal bond by establishing communication that easily understood and based on mutual respect.

Susan was the first person to step forward with help with her Collie puppy, David. The following is a note that the hosts of the workshop received a few days after the event. Thanks to Susan and the folks at Kennel Club USA for sharing this message.

collie puppy remote collar training seminar

Mark,Brandy and Jon,

I am very pleased with the That’s My Dog seminar you hosted this past weekend. David and I learned a lot.
This morning when I woke up I called David to go out side. He came immediately and sat in front of me while I hooked on his leash. I started towards the door but David did not move. I had forgotten to give him the “Let’s go” command. When he had finished I ask him to come. Once again he came and sat in front of me. This is pretty amazing considering he is only 5 months old, two days of training and I had not yet put on his remote collar. At the office the remote collar worked wonders. I only had to remind him once not to jump on people. David was a real gentleman. He is big enough to seek and destroy anything on the book shelves and desk.  The remote and “off” command made it clear to him not to touch. The collar has proved to me to be a valuable training tool.
Thanks for this opportunity and the great lunches.

  • I totally agree that the so called dog shock collars are a good thing. I use it mostly to control long distance commands. And mainly to avoid accidents to happen. That i believe is the greatest benefit of the dog training collar.

  • Hey, I have got a few minutes and finally found you!
I really enjoyed the foundation workshop for remote collar training!
It is refreshing to see this training technique in action – which feels very different from the traditional teaching obedience by using the training collar and leash. Training in this manner seems to help the information and learning “flow” much easier for me.
    Thank you very much!
