The other day I received a Facebook message regarding remote collar training from a colleague in Ontario. My friend, Karen Laws, from Ontario Dog Trainer, had a post on her wall from a recent client that she wanted to share. I asked her if I could also share here on The Truth About Shock Collars. The story speaks for itself, proper use of an e-collar can help transform highly reactive dogs into calm, thinking pets that are […]
One of the many reasons I like training with an electronic dog collar is because I believe it is a quicker path to off leash freedom for a dog. Rather than using the tool as a “shock collar” and punishing a dog for none compliance, myself and many other professional dog trainers world-wide are using e-collar stimulation as a prompt to gain a dogs attention in the midst of distractions. Once the tap on the shoulder gets the dogs attention […]
Rule #1: Proper Fit of a Remote Dog Training Collar Is Essential Proper fit of a remote dog training collar is one of the most over looked reasons for poor results. Viewers write and tell me the e-collar “didn’t seem to work” or it didn’t seem like it was working so they kept turning the level up and then the dog startled. When I’ve had opportunity to witness these problems in person I generally find that the e-collar is just […]

Questions & Answers: Remote Collar Dog Training Recently I had a chat with Ty Brown of Dog Behavior Online about e-collar training. We discussed some of the basic training concepts as well as some of the commonly held misconceptions such as; can e-collars be used with anxious dogs? Are they ok to use in the case of aggression issues. Are they really humane and how do they feel? What does it mean to use the Just Right level? I remember […]
I shot a bit of video today to respond to one of the most lame dog training video’s I’ve seen regarding “shock collars”. It was obvious from the moment I clicked on this video the trainer didn’t have a clue of what e-collar training was about. How obvious? Well, if a person is trying to demonstrate a training technique and they use time lapsed video footage of their training a STUFFED ANIMAL, that pretty much sums up their actual level […]
This past weekend I was in Texas presenting a remote collar training workshop with On The Ball K-9 Training. We had a wonderful group of participants, both pet owners and other professional dog trainers. The dogs ranged from young pups to older dogs with behavioral issues. Regardless of age or past history, we started at the beginning and learned the foundation skills necessary to build better behavior. The foundation skills of remote collar training include teaching the dog that stimulation […]
Remote dog collar training is as much of an art as it is a science. And art is usually about quality not quantity. I know for a fact there aren’t enough quality dog trainers around. That statement is easily represented by the amount of dog problems that are present world-wide. If more people really “got it” in regards to dogs, we just wouldn’t see the issues of aggression, fear, and behavioral instability that we see. “Getting it” means being educated. […]
This past week I’ve been busy teaching my 10 day professional dog trainers course. We are a week into it, and I wanted to share a few reflections. We started the week with 6 students and a variety of dogs to work with. Most of the students brought either their own dog or a clients dog, plus we had several of our training dogs in residence to work with. On day one, none of the dogs were e-collar literate. They […]
It is starting out another busy dog training week here in the office at That’s My Dog! Inc. We’ve been pretty steady through the entire winter, but as the weather warms up, things get even busier. This week is no different and there has been the added influx of e-mails from people around the country and world seeking assistance with questions about remote collars and how to train with them. As this blog continues to grow I am getting more […]
